FAU and PVA CGS GmbH conclude a 3-year agreement on distribution of FAU SiC growth technology

PVA Crystal Growing Systems GmbH (Wettenberg, Germany) takes over the international distribution of the industrial crystal growth technology for silicon carbide (SiC) developed at FAU. SiC semiconductor wafers are primarily used in power electronics, a key technology in energy technology.

The Crystal Growth Lab (www.crystals.tf.fau.eu) headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Wellmann (Department of Materials Science 6, Faculty of Engineering at FAU) has more than 25 years of experience in the field of SiC crystal growth. Not least due to numerous industrial inquiries, a major research focus of the Crystal Growth Lab is on the development of PVT technology processes for the production of crystals with large diameters of 150 mm and 200 mm. This required the clarification of fundamental issues that could be addressed in a university environment. The team at FAU succeeded to set a very homogeneous temperature field in the PVT growth crucible. This allows crystal growth to take place uniformly at over 2000°C which enables a higher process yield.

The basic PVT growth technology developed at FAU is virtually independent of the specific system design and should enable PVA Crystal Growing Systems GmbH customers to start PVT crystal growth of SiC without a great deal of preliminary work. Companies already established in the field of SiC crystal growth can also benefit from the FAU’s special approach of setting an almost ideal temperature field with simple means. PVA Crystal Growing Systems GmbH will take over the further licensing of the FAU technology for both customer groups.

Current and former FAU project partners have the choice of purchasing the growth technology from PVA or directly from FAU. The currently newly developed process technology based on the close-space PVT process (production of SiC pucks up to a thickness of approx. 10 mm) is also offered directly by FAU to interested academic and industrial parties.

The very successful cooperation with PVA Tepla is largely made possible by the services of the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Office WTT (S-Outreach) at FAU.
